In a bid to ensure food security and promote a healthy diet amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Quezon City government distributed food packs containing fresh produce from the city’s urban farms to thousands of indigent families.
The city handed out food packages to a total of 36,000 4P’s and Yakap Day Care family beneficiaries under its Handog Pasasalamat program.
The food package contains a bag of rice, canned goods, and several sets of vegetables that were harvested from the different urban farms all over QC.
“This project aims to bring nutritious food to the table of our QCitizens, especially those who were badly affected by this pandemic,” said Mayor Joy Belmonte.
“Sa muling pagtaas ng mga kaso, gusto nating unahing tulungan ang mga nagmumula sa mga vulnerable sectors. Gusto nating siguruhin na malakas ang kanilang pangangatawan lalo na’t ito ang pangunahing puhunan nila
para sa araw-araw na pakikibaka,” Belmonte added.
She said the project emphasizes the importance of urban farming to ensure that the people will have greater access to a healthy and safe source of food even during and beyond this pandemic.
Further, displaced workers during the pandemic were given new opportunities to earn as they were also tapped to grow and harvest these produce.
Under the Joy of Urban Farming project of the Office of the City Mayor, several urban farming sites were established all over the six districts of the city.
