Mayor Joy Belmonte expressed how city-level climate and sustainability actions inspire global efforts, during the opening ceremony of the sixth United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6) Cities and Regions Summit in Nairobi, Kenya.
The mayor showcased various QC programs contained in the city’s Enhanced Local Climate Change Action Plan (ELCCAP) that contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goals and global environmental goals set out in Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs).
Among these initiatives are the city’s urban agriculture program that has provided 25,000 good green jobs, ordinances banning plastic bags and single use sachets, the Trash to Cashback program and replacing QCity buses with an electric fleet.
The mayor also stated how important climate financing is to further scale up the implementation of environmental initiatives.
Mayor Belmonte, hailed as the UNEP Champion of the Earth 2023, joins global leaders, local officials, international organizations and private sectors in discussing pressing issues of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.
